My son is a new oboe player (since Jan) and is playing on an older Selmer 123F. It is in rough condition, but I got it on the cheap and had it repaired as I wasn't sure he would really play the oboe. He also plays piano and sax and I honestly expected that he would drop an instrument. Instead he has practiced all three faithfully each day and I am ready to invest in a better instrument for him. His oboe needs another $100 in repairs to make it "better", so it may be time to just replace it instead. Our budget is just about $2000 and I am getting conflicting advice from each person with whom I talk. So, I am opening this up for general consensus. Here are the instruments up for discussion . . . . in no particular order:
Patricola Advanced http://www.wwbw.com/Patricola-Advanced-Oboe-463804-i1436757.wwbw
Fossati Tiery J10 (new/used)
Fox 330 (new/used)
Fox 450, 1987 - really out of my price range, but it is a full conservatory system
Bulgheroni Student http://oboemarket.com/bulgheroni-student-oboe-detailed-review-specs/
Allora?? http://www.wwbw.com/Allora-Vienna-Series-Intermediate-Oboe-Model-AAOB-802-585365-i1527594.wwbw
Various Yamaha models (241, 441, 441A)
I can take a few of these on trial, but these are from three different resellers so I can't necessarily do every combination of the above. I'd appreciate some reasonable feedback on my options for my very musical son. Thanks!
