Hello.
I'm a 15 year old learning the oboe in my secondary school and there has been a really frustrating problem with my reeds.
They often close up, meaning have a really small opening, after 30 minutes of playing. I soaked them for 5-10 minutes each time before practice, tried pressing the wire around the reed, blow in steady slow warm air hoping it'll open up but none of these seem to work. My current reed is 1 week old, which i got from a local reed maker.
When they close up, all the low notes turn into higher ones and the intonation is really horrible, it's also difficult to tongue properly on them. My band conductor seems to think that i'm giving him excuses, whenever i mention my reeds. =/
I've been learning the oboe for 2 years plus and i'd really like to acheive the dark warm round tone, my high notes are exceptionally thin. I've tried opening my nasal cavity, pushing warm air, have good air support and regular practices, doing lots of tone studies and technicals, but it has only improve by a little.
I'd really like to improve fast for the upcoming concert, and i'm seriously stuck in self-training for the oboe and there's lots of solos to be played.
Any suggestions made will be really greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
=)
