Hello all.
I've had a bout of stomach flu. I was wondering if anyone else feels the need to disinfect after a cold/flu. I think us oboists are pretty meticulous already but maybe there is more.
I was going to wipe the keys with rubbing alcohol, wash and air dry my swab, and sterilize my reeds. Should I do anything else? I know I can't get them all, but that flu was not nice.
Should I let my case air out? I clean the case every now and then - vacuum, wipe out, etc.
I always swab really well, but realize that my swab goes back in the case and basically festers. What do you others do? Perhaps keep a second swab and rotate? Right now would be a good time to wash swabs, as it's 12% humidity in my house. Anyway...

Give the swab a wash in some disinfecting solution and wipe you keywork over..if you want to belt and buckle it dip your reeds in low volume hydrogen peroxide to kill off any biology projects..rinse thoroughly.
I don't think you need worry unduly viruses are fairly fragile and you will have built up an immunity to it now..
As my nanny would say, (a very matter of fact woman) "a few germs won't do you much harm so don't over egg the custard dear" and her advice stood me, my brother and many other children in good stead.

You can't get sick from the exact same virus twice and I doubt it would live long enough on your oboe or reeds to mutate. If someone else touches or plays your oboe, it would be a good idea to soak the reeds in a combination of hydrogen peroxide and water.

You SHOULD develop antibodies to whatever current virus you have, so as long as you don't share your instrument you're probably safe.
I use Sterisol for the reeds, I think it has benzalkonium chloride in it.
Hydrogen peroxide doesn't kill everything and can break down the reed fibers if you use it too much or too concentrated.
I would avoid using alcohol on anything wood or bamboo.
To kill fungus, you can mix warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap and some bleach, but use that in a well-ventilated area because the fumes are not safe. If you ever use that, be sure to rinse well and thoroughly air-dry.
Your practice of vacuuming your case is good.
I hope that helps.
Stay well!!
