Any recommendations for a quick oboe repair in or close to the Denver area? I have an instrument with a bound low C#mechanism, possibly a bent rod. Normally I send my instruments out of state for maintenance and repair, but wondering if there is a local alternative for quicker turnaround. Thanks.

You have most likely bumped the Eb key, which kinks the tube where the C# shaft runs through it. Grasp the Eb and pull firmly out, away from the C key. If you're lucky you can unkink the mechanism. If this doesn't do it, then yes, you will need to find a repairman to disassemble and straighten it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the good advice! That is a great trick to know. It did help somewhat in that the C# key now rebounds when just holding the instrument. However, when any of the righthand keys are depressed it still does not rebound. So, still looking for recommendations if there are any.

Larry Naylor...

He does very good work. Naylors-woodwinds-repair.com

Or come to my place and I will try to do it as a favor.

If it really is a bent rod, go to Naylor...

But still, come by for some oboe duet fun when you have time. I am 1/2 HR s/w of Denver in Roxborough Park.

Always love to makes me some new oboe friends...

Last year my oboe got knocked over and the Eb mechanism jammed, very much like what you are describing. And the performance was that evening.

I called Alvin Swiney (who is in Richmond, VA), and he talked me through the fix (which involved a hammer and screwdriver and a lot of nerve). It worked immediately, and it's been fine ever since.

I was an established client, but I'd bet he would help you, if he can.

I have two emails for Alvin: sfdr@aol.com and
corkpad@aol.com. Phone is 804-439-8671.

He is also on Facebook quite a lot, under his own name.

Good luck!

Susan
