 NEED reeds!
Author: plclemo
Date:   2012-11-12 01:03

My teacher gave me the name of a man in Maryland (American Oboe Reed Company) who makes what she deems to be "very acceptable" reeds. SO, I ordered 3 about 3 weeks ago. However, just yesterday I got an e-mail from him stating that due to the death of his mom he would be unable to fill any orders and that he was refunding the purchase price and shipping charges. ANYWAY, this leads me to still needing reeds (almost desperately enough to buy them at the local music store - no, not quite, but close GRRRRR!) Any one out there make and sell them to the public? And more importantly, could ship them in about 2 weeks? He was charging $12 each for student grade reeds. TY!!!

I've had good luck with Edmund Nielsen. The reeds arrive pretty quickly, a week or less.

I have used reeds from American Oboe, and they are quite good.

Here is another source of absolutely excellent reeds that I have found recently: Innoledy. http://www.innoledy.com/oboe_supp-reeds.html

I order their "premium" reed ($24). I've ordered six in total, and every single one of them has been fantastic. Dead-on pitch, terrific dark color, excellent response, medium resistance. I don't even have to check my tuner any more when giving the A.

They are also, hands down, the fastest shipping reed source I have ever found.

I am indebted to the young oboe ladies in the Duke Youth Symphony for putting me onto this source of outstanding reeds.

My oboe teacher also recommends Edmund Nielsen. As for store bought I would go with Charles Double Reed reeds - if your store stocks them.

I've done well with Drew Keller, Cooper Wright, and Mark Chudnow,
but getting reeds quickly... that's a toughie.

Please plan to at least learn how to ADJUST a store-bought reed for your use in an emergency like this one. The tool outlay is minimal for the years of service you'll get from a knife, a plaque, and a plastic cutting block. The ruler you can buy at the drugstore.

Here is a link with many reed resources.

The Reedmaker is Kerry Willingham, retired 1st oboe from the Army Field Band running his biz out of Annapolis. He has an expeditious delivery option for some extra $, but you might try him. It is a good idea to buy reeds made not too far from where you live.

I wonder about the student reeds and intermediate ones he offers. My opinion is all reeds start as pro-reed candidates and then get sorted out later. My other opinion is nothing teaches a player faster than a well adjusted oboe and a pro reed.

At any rate, find a source that provides reeds you can play with very little in your embouchure. Too much in causes a biting problem and intonation issues and that bad habit is very hard to fix.

A good reed plays up to pitch with very little downward pressure from your mouth and little reed into your mouth. The lips should actually push forward a little then fold gently to form a cushion between your teeth.

Bad reeds will not work that way. Check Kerry's site. He has playing samples to illustrate his core sound concept and has a great reputation for finding you what you need.

He has some great (but unfortunately low-res) videos of reedmaking on his site, as well.

Postscript: his videos have been updated. Check them out!
