Fernand Gillet (1882-1980) was principle oboe of the Boston Symphony from 1925-1946. He had studied in Paris with his uncle Georges Gillet, who was oboe professor at the Conservatoire from 1881-1919.
The Loree oboe was the official oboe of the Paris Conservatoire at this time, and there is no doubt that Fernand would have at least started his career playing Loree.
If this oboe is a Loree, though, the serial number would put it very early, around 1881 or 1882 unless for some reason it was numbered out of sequence. This seems unlikely to me.
I would love to see pictures of this oboe. Perhaps the keywork could tell us more? The most knowledgeable experts I know of in this field are Geoffrey Burgess and Robert Howe. I think they both would be interested in examining this instrument, and they could tell you more than I could.
