Most non-oboe players I know of are reluctant to take up oboe because of the fingering which seems very backward compared to flute, clarinet and sax fingerings.

If a sax fingered oboe was developed, the keywork is far less complex compared to a full Conservatoire system oboe. But it's a gamble most makers aren't willing to take which is a shame aas there are plenty of sax players who would like to play oboe, but are put off simply because of the fingerings.

Consider how easy a soprano sax is to play in comparison to an oboe - I only wish I could get around an oboe just as easily as I can a soprano sax! The only thing left to worry about will be the reed if that was the case.

If the characteristics of an oboe were preserved by keeping as many narrow toneholes as possible, then surely no-one hearing it will notice what system keywork it has unless they saw it being played.

But all oboe players and oboists have their own unique sound - some players with a very brash or forceful tone may already sound like they're playing on a Sax-fingered oboe (and there are a lot of clarinet players out there who sound like they're playing a soprano sax - badly)!
