I appreciate all of the helpful input....there is some really good advice and insight here, and my concern about a certain "culture of oboists" has been confirmed. For now, I like the suggestion of playing oboe parts on my soprano sax best and will likely follow that path (admittedly, the one of least resistance by far). And none of that "make your own reeds" stuff that is way beyond what I'm interested in (and I shall never again take for granted buying a box of Vandoren or Rico Royal reeds and having 6-7 in a box work just fine!)

I'll think about just how serious I am about taking up oboe -- at the moment, apparently not enough to plop down for either a sax-fingered or conservatory model. I still like the idea of a sax-fingered (boehm) oboe, and I may very well pursue that path someday.

In the meantime, perhaps the world of "oboe-dom" will loosen up just a little. For what it's worth, I think a little exploration into "jazz oboe" or at least something a little less uptight than the usual might be very much needed....
