Newsies & viewsies
... ohsusan, welcome back, glad to 'reed' you're taking the plunge at last
... have to really learn how to sharpen that knife properly & often, eh?
...good huge clear printable reed map (aka oboe reed diagram) on Martin Schuring's site Arizona State U, dunno what mag X loupe lamp will make real reed ever look that big, HA
... you may be interested to know that a brand-new Yamaha 441 (goodbye 411, it was nicely in tune when i exchanged it) which i'm busy blowing in just now, recently needed a few *** adjustments *** like its predecessor
... after only a couple of weeks C/B went out of tune, and teacher was already shaking head at Yamaha's standard forked F (very dull)
... teacher also tsking the extra ## forked F with Eb (my favorite deeply engrained fingering, presently undergoing PPPainstaking surgical conversion to LHF's!)
... pay attention, Dutchy, this oboe's only 2 weeks into blowing in and i discovered one of articulated F-res screws was working its way out, so vent pad wasn't opening wide enough, which was really dulling down sound of standard forked F's (so yeah of course i added Eb to ## it!)
... note that right Eb key was functioning fine in spite of all the extra work i give it, no adjustments needed there
... well, after some screw adjustments, the C/B's back in tune again, and my :-) favourite engrained fingering :-) now plays F instead of flat F#
... amazing what a tightened F res screw, and few quater turns of ED adjustment screws will do to showcase any F note
... wish I'd known about ED adjusting screws when I met that beautiful Buffet last year, which only played F's, no E at all ... sigh :-( it got away from me
... ah, that reminds me, correction needed re water holes ... it IS NOT my F-res where water so often gathers, it's F-VENT (beside standard F), think i incorrectly wrote it was F-res (lower down the pipe) on some post earlier, i usually blow hard down the pipe -- all holes closed, no reed --- to move it on, only happens before instrument is warmed up and dripping at the bell
CD's and recordings
... and hey, i just caught end of PBS at noon today, airing Berlin Philharmonik's Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra & Debussy's Fetes conducted by Pierre Boulez , so hurrah! now i know i've both heard and identified *** Albrecht Mayer *** who was featured quite prominently in the Bartok which echoed magnificently in one of Lisbon's cathedrals
... now there's a lively expressive oboist with a wonderful flexible sound ... research bio describes it as singing style like voice ... yup, i like it, i like it
... now i wonder what kind of reed scrape he plays???
