Hi Tanner,
I would recommend that you for sure request the left C# key!
Left C# key is actually now standard on all Hiniker oboes, though best to be sure
you ask that your oboe have this key.
Woods: Grenadilla, Cocobolo, Honduran Rosewood, Madagascar Rosewood (Dalbergia Baronii, a.k.a. "Pallissander"), Brazilian Rosewood, Pink Ivory.
Tom has also made (and is making) some instruments out of exotic woods (Snakewood, Cocus) also, though the stock has all been "spoken for."
Tom's Cocobolo wood is from a stash originally purchased in the 1930's, so it is well aged by now. And, having enough Cocobolo to make about 500 oboes, he can pick and choose absolutely the very best pieces, and color match.
Other materials: clear cast Acrylic, though if you wish to have a translucent
"hot pink" oboe, Tom can accomplish this also.
Plating: Copper strike + Quadruple silver plating by Anderson.
Gold plate (copper strike + 2 layers silver + 2 layers gold) is also available,
though very expensive.
Features: 3rd octave key, left C# key, "Philadelphia high D" key,
low Bb resonance key. Half length P.E.T. sleeve line in upper joint
in all wooden oboes.
Styles: "Standard design" (also available: a variant of the "standard"
model is an oboe specifically designed for a second oboist).
"Hiniker/Ferillo Model B" (Google "Hiniker oboe Ice Princess").
This oboe has THE most projection and volume of sound of ANY oboe I
I have ever come across, no contest. Yet it does not "sell its soul"
for having such sound. The "Model B" still has "core," "complexity,"
"depth," and great dynamic facility (finesse) from whisper ppp to fff.
This is really an oboe best suited to a principal oboist.
Not for the feint of heart... With the "B" you can compete with the 3rd
trombone in an orchestra that persists in "substituting decibels
for passion." Only two B model oboes have been made so far, both in
clear cast Acrylic.
I am looking forward to giving a "Model B" in Cocobolo a try.
Waiting list: about ten years
Second hand Hiniker oboes do come up for sale ever other blue moon or so.
Expect to pay the price of new.
In the works: a new design oboe d'amore (to low Bb), and a new design of bass oboe, also to low Bb. Tom has no plans to make an English horn though.
With very best wishes,
Peter
