I never tried store-bought lard, but there was a general consensus at the time that the home-brewed stuff was better.

I didn't experience any gunk build-up.

(But I was young, they were bassoon joints, and it's a long time ago!!)

I have to say that the only thing I like about the newer chapstick approach is that you don't get your fingers greasy when applying it. Apart from that I find that the "lard-like" substances do a better job and that their lubricative effect lasts longer.
