The Lyric tube cork grease I'm using is a little bit gunky to apply. I also have some Yamaha cork grease in a mini cap which is a bit harder, but feels oily when you put some on your finger. The latter takes a very tiny amount to grease up the cork, and I find that more suitable for greasing corked staples, too, as I'm afraid the other will gunk up the narrow part of the bore.
As for the lip balm, I'm just worried that additives like menthol or camphor, etc., is a bad thing for the metal tenon (corrosive??) and if the vapours will get into the wood. Mind you, I always have lip balm on my lips, but that's a necessity else my lips automatically crack and I wouldn't be able to play anything. I've had times when I was in extreme pain playing due to cracked or irritated lips.
