I had the good fortune to sit alongside Marc in the late 60's/early 70's while subbing in SF. He had a way of laying out even the most familiar phrases in a way that caused me to think, "Oh. Of course. THAT'S how it goes!" He had a sound that was the perfect blend of 'bright central star' with a full surrounding halo of overtones that kept it from being edgy, to my ear the most perfect oboe sound I've ever heard.
The most important thing he ever said to me in a lesson was, "Caress the instrument, don't assault it!"
And in truth, to watch him play, that's exactly what he did. Even in the fastest, most difficult passages there was never a move he made that appeared rushed. It looked like he was playing in slow motion, very fast. Each hand and finger motion was prepared in advance before being executed, as it would be when you practice very slowly. And he did a great deal of embouchere manipulation as well, which I've not done in my own playing.
I was lucky enough to play the Grand Canyon Suite and the Bizet Symphony in C with him - true white knuckle experiences for me - but I always found him to be a friendly, non-judgmental section leader and I consider that period to be the most formative of my musical life.
