It does seem that way, Mark. I like a little European 'warmth' in my sound, and it is tricky to get this with a longer-scrape reed. The reeds I buy are stable and 'covered', usually, and (for my kind of playing) have a more limited dynamic range. But it is so easy for 'warmth' to develop a teensy-weensy little 'buzz'.
All the folks out there who advocate 'response' over 'tone' have been of real help to me lately.
