Hey, Graham!
When I first went to my current (very non-directive) teacher, I at first decided to seek out someone else, because I didn't feel like we were accomplishing anything.
And she is a bit on the loosey-goosey side (as much as anybody with a doctorate in anything could be called loosey-goosey), but I do a lot of basic work on my own through reading and the internet and experimentation, and she is very open to hearing about/discussing the ideas I bring in. She is also massively supportive, enthusiastic, and kind. I was very nervous when I first went to audition for her, because I figured I was gonna get cut off at the knees, so to speak. But she immediately focused on what I was doing right, and then in a gentle and down-to-earth way, suggested I might like to upgrade my embouchure. (Boy, howdy!)
That was SO much better for me than being told right out of the box what I was doing wrong. I feel really comfortable with her, and I can relax and really do the best I can do.
As long as the student is working at it, and the teacher is musically competent and paying attention, I think it kinda all comes out in the wash, as far as progressing on the instrument. I've decided to put the idea of another teacher on hold for now.
