Just thought I would mention here that it IS possible to go (as I have) 30 years, and 7 professional oboes/E. horns, without a single crack of any kind. I have never bought an oboe that I considered to have an especially wide/open grain pattern. A good piece of grenadilla, in my opinion, should have almost no visible grain at all. For me, at least (and yes, it may be pure dumb luck), this has made all the difference. I have played, by the way, in nearly every possible combination of temperature, altitude, humidity, etc., all over the world; however, I am always very careful about warming my instrument before playing it -- every time, and I keep my cases humidified. I do not oil the bore, but I used to.
