I still use a tuner (i.e. equal temperament) as a standard when making reeds or adjusting/voicing an oboe. It is a good standard to use, in order to have a basic "home" position with which to start for each note on the instrument.
I also train my ear/embouchure/throat/etc. by playing scales and long tones against a drone. Most tuners have an adequate tone generator that can act as a drone for you, on any pitch (the tone generator should be set to play Tonic of whatever key you are using). THE BEST DRONE I have found, the one I use daily and recommend to all my university students, is "Cello Drones for Tuning and Improvisation," by Marcia Sloane. It is harmonically rich, and very fun/engaging to play along with. It is available as an iTunes download here:
