Its highly subjective..Buy the Instrument on the day, "buy the Oboe not the name" is a comment I once heard or read somewhere..Ultimately its up to you. You know what you like and what you dont so see what fits, if it doesnt work for you then its not the Oboe for you.
Ideally you should try a handfull of Howarth's and a handfull of Loree's. .As you seem to be in the USA the standard is Loree I gather though why is a mystery..yes they are first class instruments but so are Howarth, Marigaux, Rigoutat, Moenig, Puchner, Frank, Josef et al and a whole host of other less well known makers..try as many as possible and get as much keywork as possible if you can unless your an 8 year old child with limited experience and strength..
I play Loree and am very hapapy with them, beautiful instruments but I wouldnt say no to any maker if the Oboe was to my liking and suited me.
