If you look at the bark and it is not a smooth surface, it's grainy. The word refers to wood grains, and the adjective supposes the grains are big and make a textured relief.
There are probably better words, but people understand "grainy" to mean slightly or somewhat rippled. I don't mean dents left by where the leaf stems grow, I mean an overall small rippled texture.
Again, be careful of colour: it comes with age and bark & "meat" can be very different.
