When I play from memory I always want to keep my eyes open so that I am engaged with the audience. If I am about to be in trouble - a challenging fingering section or something I have to think about to not have a memory slip - I will close my eyes to bring my focus back to what I need to be doing - and then open again when I am free to continue show-boating.
