Rachel (WoodwindOz) - in pit bands the reed 1 book is generally the flute specialist, book 2 is usually the clarinet specialist, reed 3 is usually the oboe specialist, reed 4 is usually the bari sax specialist and reed 5 is the bassoon specialist. But all players in reeds1 to 5 are required to play flute (plus piccolo and alto), saxes (SATB) and clarinets (Eb,Bb and bass) to a good standard - the amount of doubling on each isntrument will vary depending on the show.

What is annoying is when you have some arrogant brass players that moan about woodwind players taking ages to set up or pack up afterwards when they get the easy job as only they only have to change mutes or the trumpet players may have to play some fluegelhorn as well - they're usually the last in and first out as well. It's such a hard life for them!

String players don't have to double either - unless some of the violins have to play viola as well.

In the rhythm section, percussionists have the most gear, then the drummers, then the bass player, then the keyboard player, then the guitarist and unless the pianist uses their own gear they don't have much lugging around or setting up to do.
