Robin, I live in a place situated between fed land with lots of trails and a couple of state parks. Out my door, I can go on some of the hardest trail rides I've ever attempted.
After a couple hard tumbles a few years ago, I learned the importance of proper fit of the bike and have since gotten into bikes that go for what a good oboe does, so no more blaming the gear for me..:) Two hand surgeries later, I hope never to repeat that particular problem. It came VERY close to costing me 2 finger tips... and did make me cancel one rare local pro oboe audition.
Better riding technique with more practice, just like with oboe, has me riding much more confidently, even over the spots that once threw me off the hills. A really good bike helps with that, too.
If I had to choose between oboe and biking and other exercise, I'd choose the biking. We can always do music in other ways besides oboe, like recording engineering and mastering as long as the ears hold out.
But I am very happy the oboe is still part of my day, too. For as long as humanly possible.
