I would second everything Bob said. My education at NEC was so narrow-sighted in terms of the broad spectrum of world-view, that I was just plain bored. Coming from an International Baccalaureate program in my high school, I expected more opportunities to study other topics. This was one of the many reasons I found that conservatory life was not for me.
Another aspect of such an education is that I simply didn't meet a lot of people who were interested in other aspects other than music, and I had a hard time relating to friends who sat in the practice room for 8 hours a day. (That's a literal 8 hours a day, no exaggeration.) Granted, one is now one of the premiere cellists in Canada now, while another was an associate conductor of the SF symphony and now a big name, and their focus got them to where they wanted to be, but it just wasn't my path.
