I just spoke to my physiotherapist: apparently wind players wreck their backs and mess-up their shoulders with improper breathing.
When we say "breathe with your diaphragm", it is correct, but we do it wrong: the wind players she saw expand only the belly towards the front. The diaphragm is supposed to mostly expand the rib cage outwards to the side, and this is what she told me to do.
I find that when I think that way, my sides expand and my lower back also bellows a bit. I also feel my lungs much fuller and much fresher.
