Yes, the "mashed" fingering, as you call it, is perfectly appropriate and widely used for exactly the situation you are describing. It's a lifesaver, IMO.

You MIGHT be able to roll up into a right-hand G# from low E. It depends on how quickly this all has to happen, where you must go next, and if slurred or not.
