Being a band (flat keys) musician this is a combination of fingerings that does happen every now and then, and just having finished a practice session consisting of the Cimarosa Concerto and the Saint-Saens Sonata, which both contain this combination, I am open to suggestions as to the smoothest way to finger this.
I was using C, left Eb and then the (right) side Ab, but despite long fingers, I can't seem to get from Eb to Ab without getting the G in the middle (can't get to the Ab key in time).
I have also recently realised that, like sax but unlike flute (hence why it took me so long!), the G#key closes with the lowering of RH 1st finger. So my latest incarnation of this fingering is to play the Eb with the standard Ab down as well (like the 'mashed' fingering for high E and F), and then I have no problems smoothly getting all the RH fingers off. It will take some practice to get it automatic, but is this kosher, and does anyone else use this in this situation? Other tips welcome!!
