I'm at the enviable point of choosing an instrument. I have had two lovely used English Horns all week and played them at every opportunity and with my teacher. I know that either one would be a good choice. I am a (nearly) 60 year old amateur and know my limitations and I would not "outgrow" either one. Each has strengths and weaknesses. The one that has the most beautiful tone feels like the mechanism is slightly cranky. It has more tiny clicks and a sticky pad. The other has a beautiful mechanism and even scale. It sounds lovely as well but doesn't have that "je ne sais quoi". And yet, I enjoy playing it a lot. When I play the (slightly) better sounding one my concerns about the keys get in the way. It's older and lacks the low b vent and the little tab for the first finger of the right hand. But it's a little lighter weight. As I meditate and consider my choices, I just thought sharing my process might help me clarify things. Thanks for listening!
