I've been desperately trying to get a more baroque-ish sound on the modern oboe. This might be dreaming considering my standard-bore Loree. => ChrisP, if you can recommend a "well known maker" with a bore to help out, I wouldn't mind being able to compare....
Searching for shapers online, the measurements given often look like those of an English horn shaper, but not likely because the pictures show a distinct waist whereas the E.H. shapers I have tend to be more parallel.
Anyway, putting an E.H. reed in my oboe gives a really good approximation of the baroque oboe except that the stability goes really haywire, especially (but not only) in the half-hole notes.
I'd expect oboe d'amore shapes to be similar:
* on oboe staples they sound really baroque-ish, but are really hard on stability
* on oboe d'amore staples the stability is great, but so far it still sounds like a modern oboe!
The best so far is the Kunibert Michel shaper 725 wide belly (has a good waist) on Stevens #3, german scrape and much thicker tip and heart. It has the tone colour, but not the depth (being much narrower). The RDG #2 shaper gives the depth, but I have a hard time getting the colour and maintain stability.
