A follow up to yesterday's video post, showing some subtle things that happen as the reed 'candidate' becomes a useful reed over a couple days.
One thing I puzzle about is how the pro reed makers can invest enough time to produce useful reeds, meaning stable and somewhat 'broken in', or whether the oboists relying on purchased reeds need to manage these final steps. They really are the most subtle and precise knife-wielding stages of the reed making and require a good understanding of all aspects of reed function and the interactions between them when something is changed. Its cause and effect, and subtle balances, and guesswork rarely works well.
We all need to learn to adjust them as we go along anyway, but there is really something special about a fresh reed just after its ready for prime time.
Once you've had that experience it really raises the bar on what is acceptable.
That is a good thing for the playing, just a little hard on the wallet at times.
