Ha! Late John Mack is spot on, the mere power of that sentence of promoting function not sound. That itself is enough to educate a whole generation of oboists to seek the right things in their reeds. Elaine Douvas makes beautiful easy but stable and projecting reeds. I was just speaking to a fellow oboist of my generation who says that from his country, there is a whole generation of teachers who teach this idea where reeds should produce the right sound, whatever that means, and there are people willing to sacrifice everything else for that sound. Was it John Mack who said that sound should be the vehicle for expression? If only enough people exercise that and stop thinking and educating that tone IS expression.
