On the subject of European oboists v. American oboists, it seems to me that America's best oboists are consumed in their orchestral duties and much less engaged in chamber and solo work. Albrecht Mayer, Francois Leleux and Stefan Schilli have recorded numerous solo and chamber CDs, to give some examples. Liang Wang, Eugene Izotov, John Ferrillo, just to take a few of the best American oboists, only a few at most (if any). It's a shame. I wonder why that is? Are the American orchestral jobs more demanding? Do they pay too well (paradoxically), so there is no pressure to make it up on the side? When Howard observed that Albrecht Mayer could essentially lead the whole orchestra from his oboe seat, I have to believe that all that experience playing in chamber groups and acting as his own conductor on his many oboe w/strings arrangements contributes to that ability. I also think that the amazingly expressive playing of many European oboists is buttressed by intense work beyond the orchestra.

Do others agree? Disagree?
