Howard,
1. Thanks for sharing!
2. Jonathan Kelly is a Great orchestral oboist, as he regularly proves with the Berliners. I love his playing on the recent set of Brahms symphonies recordings issued by Simon Rattle and the Philharmonic (Mayer and he share principal duties on the CD). Great sweet tone and coloration.
3. Your playing was very impressive. Most of Kelly's comments really have to do with musical maturity, self confidence and the art of performing. There was some commentary on technique (the arms, the resonant spaces in the oral cavity) that were very interesting, but those are very high level performing tips - how to place the body at the service of the performance. Again, that requires great confidence and presence, perhaps the ultimate goal in order to become more than a journeyman oboist.
4. I saw Albrecht Mayer perform the Strauss in Carnegie Hall with Orpheus a while back. He is the ultimate performing oboist in the sense that he makes a great effort to exude personality, charisma and presence. He may have overplayed his hand - his performance was truly disappointing in terms of mastery of technique and ultimately failed to convince. You can't let your technical game suffer even a bit, something not to forget. I think it was the great violinist Jascha Heifetz who said, "If I miss three days' practice, the public notices, if I miss two, my wife notices, and if I miss one, I notice." Mayer's got all the chops anyone could want, but even he has to walk that fine line Kelly commented on at the end of part 2 - the oboist is a neurotic for a reason, even if it needs to be hidden from the audience!!
Thanks again for posting an excellent masterclass!
