Well, it was interesting to read that Hans Holliger is the epitome of a bright sound; he is the one whose sound I like the best. I think Elaine Douvas also has a sound I like, if I am putting the right name on the sound I remember.
I had the same experience as a horn player; I like a bright sound. Now, to me, bright vs dark is NOT the same as harsh vs sweet. I've had a lot more experience both playing and listening to horns, so I'll focus my discussion there. I played 2nd for many years to a 1st who had a very dark sound. However, he had a dark, harsh sound and I hated it. Someone with a dark, sweet sound, I'm sure I'd like. I've also heard players with a bright, harsh sound, and couldn't stand their sound either. So for me, it's not about dark vs bright but harsh vs sweet.
So....perhaps I should modify what I said and say that I like a sweet sound, as opposed to harsh, but I have no idea what the spectral analysis of the sounds I like would look like. I agree completely with the definition of bright and dark in terms of frequency content.
