It's refreshing to read what you have to say about the scientific method and pursuit of pedagogical science. What you have to say about teaching might be one of the unconscious reasons I left the profession early..... although the politics of teaching elementary and high school were powerful deterrants!

I am a computer/software engineer, and I'm frustrated to read paper after paper of garbage. It seems the garbage is getting worse and more ubiquitous with time. In fact, some time ago the IEEE (or was it ACM?) launched a conference on the very nature of the peer-review system: too many people agree that it just doesn't work.

I really wish there were some grounds for "common sense" whereby you could publish your findings and compare specific instruments with sound clips and leave the conclusions to the readers. A spectral analysis of the sounds heard on that compendium of oboists recordings --- and some VERY general reed backlighting --- would be very interesting, if not fully authoritative.
