Woodhams, as I'm sure you know, is a product of the Philadelphia school, in fact the 'grandson' of Marcel Tabuteau (if the 'son' of Tabuteau were deLancie, with whom he studied).
I don't know about his personal style, but it would not surprise me if he were abrasive. I know Tabuteau was abrasive (read Laila Storch's wonderful biography 'Marcel Tabuteau'), and people I know who studied with deLancie have said he was abrasive.
But if you want a perfect picture of the Philadelphia school, get a copy of Stevens Hewitt's 'Method for Oboe'. Read it (there's as much to read and digest as there is to practice) and imagine the content being delivered by someone at the top of their career who has a no nonsense, take-no-prisoners approach and no patience for less than an all out effort and you will probably come close.
You can find Hewitt on e-Bay, and I think David Weber carries it as well.
Now go home and practice!
