I made one from a nice old (clean) rag; I didn't use a weight, just a shoestring sewn onto the cloth. I just tied a knot at the end of the string and it's been sufficient to drop (downward) through the instrument.
It does catch on the octave post when pulling through a clarinet, but patience gets it by. And I know I am not scratching the bore.
