There are lots of good observations about blanks here. To clarify, my remarks about stockpiling were only about finished reeds. I think blanks (and even semi-finished reeds) are a different story. Most reedmakers tie their blanks the same from season to season. Even the rough scrape is consistent throughout the year. Only the final adjustments vary. And often they're done so intuitively that we don't realize the differences... until we take out a reed that was finished and balanced in the summer and try to play it in the winter!
