 Oboe Trouble

Hello!

I have been playing on a used Lauree for a year now, and just last week got it looked at. However, it seems that i have water somewhere in the oboe, and no matter how many times i swab or try to use cigarette paper to get it out, I can never find it. It affects the low D, E, Eb, C, C# and even the normal D/Eb. I have no idea what the problem could be, and just got it checked. When I play a D a high A comes out, or just doesn't, and at times it gurgles, which is why I thought it was water. When I blow A LOT OF AIR it sort of goes away, but only for a while, and I want to play soft notes too... Please please help me!!

Water issues don't usually affect all the low notes from C to E flat. It sounds like you have a leak, either from worn out pads or because of adjustment problems. At worst you could have a crack in the top joint.
You might want to go to a reputable double reed repairperson.

Check the seal on your top-joint with a vacuum test as described below.

Hold the top-joint in your left hand and close all the keys with normal pressure. I dampen my fingers first.
Seal the bottom of the joint with a finger of your right-hand, and suck all the air out of the reed-well, ending up by sealing the vacuum inside with your lower lip.

If the vacuum lasts for less than 8 seconds it ain't good enough to play.

[On a well-adjusted instrument if you finger D and press Octave-2 you get the top A harmonic - so this may point to a sealing problem perhaps around the reed-well or the top-octave insert. However, any leak at an appropriate position to dampen the fundamental and 1st harmonic can cause the same effect]

The possibility of a leak in the top joint does seem the likely cause of the problem. In addition to the good ideas by oboeblank and jhoyla, check the trillers. The linkage between the middle joint and the trill key might have bent enough to cause the trill pad to open slightly when the joints are put together. This would cause an air leak which would not show up when the top joint is examined for suction separately.
