Jay, I had a similar revelatory experience years ago when I heard Keisuke Wakao play an especially strenuous recital. He played with such ease, I thought he must have lips of steel. But afterward he let me try his reeds, and I then realized that his playing seemed effortless because it actually WAS effortless. That night set a new standard for me. It transformed my goals as a reedmaker. It's not enough that a reed do all the things it's supposed to do. It has to do them effortlessly!
Cheers,
Drew
