You might also check to see if one of the blades of the reed is shorter than the other -- I was advised to play with the shorter blade on the bottom. All of the wired EH reeds that I have used (I buy them) have been constructed so that the twisted wire lays to the top.

Before I figured this out, I was playing with the wire down, and more than once, I managed to poke my lip with it. Another good reason to put it on top!
