Re: moving from thumbplate to conservatoire

One thing to be aware of on conservatoire system is not getting little Bb or C 'blips' when playing intervals such as E-A and F#-B (or any other RH note followed by either an A or a B) - you have to make sure you co-ordinate RH1 so that it lifts in time. If you're too slow lifting RH1 the A or B will sound Bb or C for a split second.

The classic place to hear this conservatoire system 'blip' is the arpeggios at the end of the cor solo in 'William Tell'.

But like all things, slow practice and gradually increasing the speed is important, as well as scale and arpeggio patterns and also familiar melodies in Bb or G minor to get used to putting RH1 down for Bb and C.

Having got used to using conservatoire fingerings for nearly every Bb and C (though I still use the thumbplate for the C in an F Major arpeggio), I really struggle playing pure thumbplate system instruments now. No problem with pure conservatoire provided I can screw the LH1 plate almost closed, but going back to pure thumbplate is tricky for me.
