Author: wrowand  Date:   2009-08-05 13:48 Having worked on my own gouging machines for over 15 years now, I am convinced that while it's possible to make a reed that plays "adequately" on a run-of-the-mill, vanilla gouge; it's almost impossible to make a great reed on such a gouge. That's why so many of the great reed makers like Marcel Tabuteau, John Mack, John Ferillo, Eric Barr, Richard Woodhams among others spend (or spent) so much time working on their gouging machines. It certainly isn't because they lacked excellent knife technique (or that they just had too much time on their hands.
