I remember, long ago when I was just learning, decades ago, when I was between 11 and 14, that my throat muscles used to 'leak' when I played, and while I didn't make much of a sound (vocalized) it sounded (to me) as if I were blowing my nose.

I think this was short-lived, because it all disappeared. so perhaps it's just a matter of those muscles getting stronger, so as to hold back the air column adequately?
