... when you get to that point where can just about play it, but it's still a bit hard, before you attempt to finish it, STOP ... put it back into water (unless it really is wet enough already)
AND, resharpen your knife to a keen edge
that way you can do the finishing with the lightest of feather strokes or dust out excess wood in very small areas, test reed, a teeny bit more here, test reed, and a bit more there, test reed, etc.
it's amazing how quickly the knife dulls just a bit, and it's so easy to press just a teensy bit harder to compensate, and so, when you get to the finishing with even a slightly dulled knife ... ooops, took too much off, too bad
