I so worried about getting it stuck that I just use a silk thingy on a stick that looks like a really thin loo brush. I've had a few near misses with my clarinet and survived them only because that clarinet is built like a tank. My oboe is certainly more fragile looking!
I suppose it did take your mind off your cold for a bit!
Have you tried putting something like menthol/Vics/Olbas oil in just boiled water (use a glass bowl that will stand the heat, you'll never get the smell out of a plastic one) then stick a towel over you head to make a tent and inhale the steam. It always helps my congestion....and it is brilliant for the complexion!
