Run the swab through your closed fist to check for knots before you swab the assembled oboe. An ounce of prevention, etc., etc. If you are just swabbing the top tube, wrap your ring finger around the tenon & let the swab run through the closed pinky below. Guaranteed to prevent a knotted swab from sneaking into the top tube. I agree, inserting the end of the swab string through the reed well is probably the best option, but this is more time consuming as the weight has to be shaken down until it comes out either the bell or the tenon hole. The reason the clarinet accommodates a swab so much better is because of its cylindrical bore as opposed to the oboe's conical bore.
