Eeek. A horrific tale, to be sure! Do you swab your oboe from top to bottom or from bottom to top? If the latter, then I'd recommend switching to the former. The oboe has a conical bore, so any knot or wrinkle in your swab that will fit through the reedwell will fit through the rest of the instrument. Swabbing starting at the bell is a recipe for disaster! And just as an extra precaution, I keep in my case a small length of narrow dowel rod for pushing out stuck swabs. It's much safer than whatever drill bits or coat hangers happen to be on hand.
