I agree with oboeDrew. In fact, and I know some of you will be horrified, I put reeds away when they're BAD and find after a few months of drying out/inactivity that they're quite usable. I am not a hoarder but experience has shown that yes, the weather does have a lot to do with reed function. I regularly commute between a hill town and sea level, and find that to affect reed function as well.
We place so much emphasis on the scrape that we often forget to take into account humidity, temperature, air pressure (outdoors, not ours), cane density and other factors. I even think our own physical level of hydration is a factor! Whether we're taking antihistamines or antidepressants or nausea medication or pain meds (which all dry out the mouth) is important: if you are, keep your soaker handy!
