Hey, tuning forks aren't altogether a terrible way to tune, they're just not visually objective. But I agree, one must have working ears for a tuning fork to be of any value...
I was in a similar position with an elderly oboist; it was most awkward.
Now that I play first, I WELCOME comments from my very helpful second. She is always polite and appropriately subtle about it. I think there's a general shortage of Courtesy in this world, so politeness and humility will (eventually) get you further (amateur or professional, the ethic is the same).
