I have a student who did the same thing about a year ago; she was a ninth-grade student then, switching from flute. I made sure she had good reeds right from the start, so if you want to improve her tone quality I think I'd start there. Why handicap her with a substandard reed? I also work with her about the importance of good support, a solid airstream and soft, rounded embouchure. I used the "golfball-in-the-mouth" analogy, and use a garden hose type analogy for the airstream; ie the hose is always full of water even when it isn't coming out that fast. This also is a useful visualization for articulation: the stream of water is not interrupted if you flick it with your finger. I thought it was best to start her thinking about this stuff right away.

I also play duets with her, which she really enjoys, and she says it helps her recognize how the concepts we talk about can really work.
